A mother and daughter are talking about making and eating rice wine dumplings.
Daughter: How about your sister?
Mother: She, she never ate them. Never ate them.
Daughter: How about your brother?
Mother: He didn't eat them. Sometimes if he was at home he’d eat eggs, two eggs and mixed with some flour.
Daughter: Your mother?
Mother: I ate more. She’d eat just a little.
Daughter: Your father?
Mother: He wasn’t at home, so he didn't eat them… Your aunt never ate them. Just I ate the most…Ah, grandmother often told me to help her wash things, clothes, blanket and trousers. I was told to wash all kinds of things. If you made her unhappy, she would be angry with you and hit you. One day I was so afraid to go back home to eat lunch. My mother called to me, "Yin Zaozi, come back home for lunch." After I returned to the village production team for work, people called me the name, Zang Suzen.
Daughter: Weren’t you called Yin Zaozi?
Mother: Oh, before I was called Yin Zaozi. That was my nickname… When I was young, I went to pick grass. One year I fed many rabbits. At one time, I sold over ten rabbits. I went to pick grass for the rabbits. Your grandmother took my grass to feed your aunt's rabbits... Your grandmother took my grass to feed her rabbits anytime. I thought my grass had been flattened and wondered why there was a hole in it. I asked, "Who took my grass?" My mother said, "It was me. I took some to feed Gui Fangzi's rabbits." Your grandmother always spoiled her... She always spoiled your aunt, Gui Fangzi.
Notes about Stories in Dialogue
- The rabbit story took place during the early 1960s in rural Sichuan. At that time, it was common for farmers to raise livestock, such as rabbits or ducks, to be sold at the local market just before Spring Festival. The farmer families did not eat the animals. Money from the sales was used to buy cloth in order to make new clothes to wear during the New Year Holiday.
- Gui Fangzi and the family have been shown the story and invited to share more Sichuan Kejia tales.
